As a leader in diesel emission control technology, Rypos conducted a rigorous in-use verification test of its diesel particulate filters (DPFs) on emergency standby generators at a San Francisco Bay area university. With over 30 Rypos DPF systems already installed across the campus, the university demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability and operational excellence. This California Air Resources Board (CARB) mandated test was essential to validate the continued performance of Rypos filters under real-world conditions. The verification process was thoroughly supported by the university and Best Environmental, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation and confirming the filters’ long-term effectiveness.
Regulatory compliance and testing objectives
Under the California Environmental Protection Agency’s regulation Section 2709 (k), Rypos was required to conduct in-use tests after installing over 300 systems in California. The primary objective was to verify the DPFs continued to meet the same stringent emission reduction standards as when they first shipped from the Rypos factory. To achieve this, Rypos developed and implemented a CARB-approved test plan, executed with the collaboration of the university and Best Environmental, a CARB-certified independent emissions laboratory.
Test methodology in action

As part of the plan, Rypos submitted ten candidate sites for consideration by CARB. They randomly selected four engines, and the tests took place between February 27th and March 14th, 2023, on campus. The selected sites included:
- Site #1: 80kW Cummins genset with Rypos 406M filter
- Site #2: 500kW Caterpillar genset with Rypos 410L filter
- Site #3: 250kW Cummins genset with Rypos 408L filter
- Site #4: 230kW Cummins genset with Rypos 406L filter
The testing procedure involved operating the generators at defined load levels (10%, 25%, 50%, and 75%) using load banks provided by the university. Requiring three 1-hour samples at each load point, the emission tests were conducted over 21 days, with 3 days of testing at each site. Weather conditions, including historic rainfall and windstorms, influenced the scheduling of the tests, but all were completed without interruptions.
Test Unit Description and Operating Hours

Impressive results across the board
The Rypos DPFs exceeded expectations, with all tested filters achieving emission averaging an impressive 88.5% reduction across all sites, well above the mandated 76.5% required to pass the test. This demonstrated not only the effectiveness of Rypos technology but also its long-term durability in varying operational conditions.
University personnel commented, “We take pride in advancing environmental stewardship through cutting-edge partnerships, and this collaboration with Rypos Inc. has allowed them to meet CARB’s stringent In-use verification standards for diesel backup generators. Rypos’ innovative filtration solutions have not only ensured compliance with California’s rigorous air quality regulations but have also helped us minimize our overall environmental footprint.”
Capturing real-world data
The in-use verification tests of Rypos HDPF/C Level 3+ filters were conducted with the active participation of Best Environmental, whose expertise contributed to the accurate and thorough collection of data. Throughout the testing, crucial parameters such as back pressure, regeneration current and housing temperature were monitored while samples for particulate matter, NOx, NO2 CO and THC were collected. Throughout the testing profile, the emission performance remained consistent, confirming the reliability of Rypos filters.
Pioneering emission control through collaboration and innovation
The successful in-use verification outcomes reaffirm Rypos’ commitment to delivering high-performing, reliable solutions for emission reduction. The spirit of partnership with the university and Best Environmental played a pivotal role in the success of this project, underscoring the importance of collaboration in advancing clean energy initiatives.
“Partnering with a prestigious university and Best Environmental has been a remarkable milestone for Rypos, said Paul Anderson, Rypos CEO. “Working with such esteemed institutions to achieve In-use CARB verification reflects our commitment to advancing clean air technologies.”
As a leader in diesel emission control, Rypos continues to set the standard for regulatory compliance and sustainability in the industry.
