Customer Success Story: Framingham State University’s Commitment to Environmental Compliance with Rypos Active DPFs
Framingham State University (FSU), a public university known for its commitment to sustainability, is continually expanding green initiatives to reduce its environmental impact. Recent efforts have included the installation of pollinator-friendly gardens, a solar panel array with electric vehicle charging stations in one of its parking lots and the addition of water bottle filling stations across campus to minimize plastic waste.
However, in November 2021, FSU received a Notice of Non-Compliance (NON) from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), citing its emergency generators for not meeting state emissions regulations. Situated along Route 9, a heavily trafficked corridor with significant diesel emissions, the university faced additional environmental challenges that stressed the need for a proactive emissions reduction strategy.
In response to the DEP’s notification, FSU’s sustainability team researched solutions to meet the regulatory requirements and identified Rypos diesel particulate filters (DPFs) as the ideal solution to address their emissions concerns. They installed Rypos DPFs on five emergency generator sites across campus, effectively meeting the DEP’s standards.
By retrofitting older diesel gensets with Rypos DPFs, operators can cut particulate emissions by up to 85-95%, lowering their environmental and carbon footprint. These reductions not only improve air quality but also ensure compliance with regulatory mandates.
While the installation of Rypos DPFs at FSU was driven primarily by regulatory compliance—a common experience for many institutions—FSU’s approach highlights the need to balance sustainability goals with legal requirements. The university remains committed to advancing its environmental initiatives, continuously seeking new opportunities to enhance its green practices and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future for both its campus and the surrounding community.
